Social Security Disability Fraud Cost Almost $100K
According to United States Attorney John Brownlee, 65-year-old Greene County, Virginia resident Irven Jones had entered a plea of guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Charlottesville for charges of wrongfully receiving nearly $97,000 worth of payments from Social Security disability.
Jones waived prosecution by indictment and pled guilty to a count of felony information charging him with the theft of money or property that belonged to the U.S. valued over $1,000.
The charges came about after an investigation conducted by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General that examined work the defendant was continuing to perform at a home for the elderly in Bealeton, Virginia even though he had been receiving disability payments from the SSA.
Evidence Assistant U.S. Attorney Nancy Healey presented showed that Jones had attempted to conceal the work he had been performing at the facility by telling his coworkers to refer any questions about his work status to his wife, also an employee at the time.
